About

Hi, I'm DJ Wetzel.
I've spent years building businesses, and learning — usually the hard way — that the strategies that actually work are rarely the ones that get the most attention online. Along the way, I learned something harder to fit on a sales page: a business can be growing while the person behind it is quietly running out of margin, health, or perspective.
On December 5, 2023, everything changed when I was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor.
What followed was brain tumor removal surgery, then a year of radiation and chemotherapy that didn't finish until March 2025. You don't walk through something like that and come back to your work, or your life, thinking about either one the same way.
It rearranged nearly everything: time, money, health, family, ambition, and what it actually means to build something that lasts. Plans I'd been carrying loosely suddenly had weight. Convictions I'd held mostly in theory — about simplicity, about margin, about stewarding a life instead of just spending it — became things I now hold dearly. I think differently now about building work, income, and systems that could carry my family even if my own road turns out shorter than I'd planned. And I've become convinced the point was never the size of what I build, but the faithfulness with which I build it.
I don't write from the far side of all that as someone who has it figured out. I write from inside it — as someone for whom the questions got real, and stayed real, and who is still learning to build with purpose and walk by faith when none of us is promised tomorrow.
That's the heart of it: a place to write about both halves of the work — the building and the staying whole — not from a position of mastery, but as someone still doing it alongside you.
What Build and Walk is
Build and Walk is a newsletter and blog, with a podcast on the way. It's built for the men and women behind the businesses — the founders, owners, operators, and the people doing the actual work, not just talking about it.
This isn't a place for hype, hacks, or hollow promises. I won't peddle any Get-Rich-Quick schemes. It's a place for honest conversations about what it really takes to build something sustainable — and stay a whole human while you do it.
You can find small-business growth strategies in a thousand places online, and many of them do good work. I'll point you toward some of them here. But Build and Walk isn't about the business in isolation. It's about the person behind it — because in the end, what you build is meant to serve a life, not consume one.
Who this is for
This isn't about what stage your business is at. It's about who you are while you build it.
Build and Walk is for you if:
- You're one of the people behind a business — a founder, owner, or operator — and you carry more than most people around you ever see.
- You're tired of measuring your worth by output, and worn down by the pressure to scale, hustle, and optimize every waking hour.
- You feel the gap between the life you're building and the life you're actually living — and you want to close it.
- You want to stay present for the people you love without the work quietly crowding them out.
- You're trying to keep your faith, your family, your health, and your peace whole at the same time — not trading one away to protect another.
- You'd rather have an honest companion for the road than another inflated sales pitch promising instant results with minimal work.
If any of that sounds like you, you're in the right place.
What we talk about
Everything here comes back to one idea: that the things worth caring about — your faith, your family, your finances, your health, your peace of mind — aren't competing priorities to juggle against each other. They're a single life, held in trust, worth stewarding well.
Five threads run through every conversation:
Faith. How we build matters as much as what we build. Faith shapes the why and the how — not as something we perform, but as the ground we stand on.
Family. Our work exists to serve our family, not the other way around. We talk about how to keep that order intact.
Finances. Real strategies for building a business that's genuinely profitable and personal finances that protect what is important.
Health. You can't build anything lasting if you're falling apart. Physical, mental, and emotional health belong in this conversation.
Sanity. Margin matters. Peace matters. Quiet matters. We talk about all of it.
